Academic & Professional Background

Krystal brings both robust academic credentials and rich practical experience to her clinical practice. She holds a Master of Science in Family Studies from Texas Woman’s University and a Master of Marriage and Family Therapy from Abilene Christian University, where she graduated with high distinction. Her extensive training emphasizes systemic, ethical, and evidence-based care.

Before joining the team at Next Chapter Counseling, Krystal spent years working with disadvantaged youth and single mothers. This background deepened her appreciation for how relationships, environment, and life experiences shape emotional well-being—guiding her specialization in relationship dynamics, life transitions, and healthy coping mechanisms.

Getting to Know Krystal

What drew you to counseling?

“I was drawn to counseling through my work with disadvantaged youth and single mothers, where I saw firsthand how deeply relationships, environment, and life experiences shape emotional well-being. I became passionate about creating safe spaces where people feel seen, supported, and empowered to move forward, even in the midst of difficult circumstances.”

What areas do you specialize in and why?

‘I specialize in working with individuals, couples, and families, with a strong focus on relationship dynamics, life transitions, and building healthy coping skills. I care deeply about these areas because I’ve seen how relational stress, unmet support, and life challenges can impact entire families. Helping clients strengthen relationships and recognize their own resilience is especially meaningful to me.

How have you seen lives changed through counseling?

“I’ve seen clients grow in confidence, improve communication, and develop healthier ways of navigating challenges. Over time, individuals and families often move from feeling overwhelmed or disconnected to feeling more grounded, empowered, and hopeful. Witnessing that shift reinforces why this work matters.”

What voices do you read or respect?

“I value voices that integrate research, relational neuroscience, and culturally responsive care. I regularly engage with the work of Dr. Sue Johnson (Emotionally Focused Therapy), Dr. John Gottman (couples and relationship research), and Dr. Dan Siegel (interpersonal neurobiology and attachment). Their insights help me stay informed, reflective, and grounded in both research and real-life application.”

One quick mental health tip you frequently recommend:

“I often encourage clients to focus on small, realistic steps rather than immediate big changes. Breaking goals into manageable pieces helps reduce overwhelm and builds momentum toward lasting growth.”
